Illustrates the development of the Braille System, which he created in 1824 at the age of 15, and how it was at first rejected and even banned at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth (where Braille attended as a child and was later employed as a teacher).

Enjoying art isn’t just about using your eyes!
As part of the Gallery’s commitment to accessibility, our award-winning Sensing Sculpture exhibition encourages visitors also to touch, smell and listen to the works on display.
Many of the sculptures come from our own collections, and some are on loan from their makers. Others have been specially commissioned for the gallery, such as part-finished works that reveal how they are made.
Abstract works, found objects and textile art sit alongside traditional bronzes and objects from nature, each one chosen for its sensory properties.
By experiencing these sculptures in the same way as the artists who made them, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of their forms and meanings and explore the methods and materials used in their creation.
Braille interpretation is provided throughout the gallery, and all visitors are encouraged to learn some braille during their visit using a giant wall panel.

Pratyahara aka sense withdrawal is one of the steps involved in going inward.
Concentration, contemplation, meditation. This video is full of various quotes from Helen Keller who was forced into Pratyahara before she could speak. Her perspective is important to remember when equating the sum total of reality with sense perception. Except for the intro, these are ALL her words.
