Why would a drive thru ATM have brail? A blind person shouln’d be driving..?

Your government at work!

A federal law passed several years ago required ATM machines to provide equal access to disabled persons. The law doesn’t differentiate between drive-up or walk-up machines, so now ALL ATMs have to have braille letters available on the key pads.

If you were half blind would you learn brail incase you went completley blind?

yes, that would be a good idea.

What do Blind people think of Louis Braille? Like is he a big hero or something like Jesus or whatever?

I read a book about him once. And do other people with special disabilities like him too?

he is a Genius and was an amazing person. I have read books over him written papers on him read braille my whole life. I don’t know where’s the blind would be without braille. so yes he is a hero and somebody to look up too

I followed a visually impaired person the other day into a well known restaurant chain.?

He asked me to tell him which was the gents toilet which I of course did but the thought did arise ,should the restaurant have had a notice on the door in Braille to eliminate this problem. The two notices that were displayed for ladies and gents were the same size,no raised lettering and could not be distinguished between ladies or gents.Should the company have done more to help?
Thank you for your answers but as stated and I did run my finger across the sign and there was no way that you could tell what was printed on the sign, whether it was a male or female facility.

There should be a lot more accessable information, unfortunately, it probably takes too much time and money for companies to bother with it. Even well-raised lettering would be wonderful, at least that should be standard by now.

And while on the subject – web sites need to get rid of visual only captcha codes that block you out if you can’t see a picture to answer a question.

What’s the best way for a sighted person to learn braille?

Im not blind, but i really want to learn. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach myself (i’d rather not take classes)? Are there any workbooks that someone suggests? What are the best methods to learning? Also just wondering is learning braille somethig good to put on a college application? Im 13 so i dont really have to think about that yet but im just curious. Thx to all answers :)

Id get a printed dot chart (one ink and one pressed) and study them. unfortunately, we are used to memorizing sight symblols, not touch symbols, so it may be hard to memorize… but id take one letter at a time and just sit down and go back and forth, looking at and feeling the letters.

-Good luck,
Rachel

do i have skin cancer?

August 6, 2011 - 11:10 pm 1 Comment

first my girlfriend pointed out a mole on the back of my neck, she said it looked funny. its always been there but according to her it looked like i got stabbed with a pencil nd the lead got stuck in my skin. i wasnt able to look at it (its on a blind spot of my body) but i noticed another mole on my chest that i’ve also had for as long as i can remember, but it looked just like she decribed, like lead broke off in my skin. it also feels bumpy. like if you ran your finger over brail writing (the blind ppl writing) so i asked my mom about it she just was like yeah it looks weird. and just a few seconds ago before i started to type the question i looked at that moleon my chest nd noticed another on the opposite side that was never there. then i started looking all over my visible body and found 4 other moles that i never had before. none of them look like lead stabbings, but they were never there. it scares me because my mom had skin cancer (had it removed) my cousin just recently got diagnosed with skin cancer (had it removed) and my grandpa died of cancer ( lung cancer from smoking though, stll not sure if that increases my odds or not) so basically im genetically predisposed to cancer. its a scary thought. also, what could cause it? i am mostly indoors and i always wear a t-shirt when im out side (most of the moles are coming up in places that are usually under the shirt) except for a few times i would go to the beach or something. but havent been to the beach since last september and this is a new thing for me, noticed the 1st mole on the last week of january.
lol u make an interesting point cress

GO SEE A DERMATOLOGIST ASAP!!!!

don’t waste you time guessing and worrying
only a physician can diagnose you so don’t count on all the goons on this site telling you what you have or don’t have.

The Name of a TV show shown in the UK in the 90s?

I really don’t remember much about it, so it ‘ll probably prove tricky. What I can remember about it (I think!) is that is was centered around a pair of grandchildren, one boy and one girl, and their grandfather. Together, they went back in time to visit various important people. I believe one of them was Louis Braille, but I could be wrong.

Any ideas anybody? Thanks!

What grade of braille is in the real world?

July 30, 2011 - 9:58 pm 2 Comments

I’ve recently begun to learn braille because I find it really interesting. I’ve learned grade 1 braille (the letters, numbers, and punctuation), but some sites I’ve researched say that grade 1 is not what is utilized in the real world. So what braille is on the signs in public places and such? Also, what kind of braille is published in books? Is it a combination? Thank you!

If you are a beginner you start with grade one but you can easily get to two.Fluent braille is grade three

Why do they have brail key pads on drive-thru ATM’s?

July 26, 2011 - 6:30 pm 60 Comments

Blind people can’t drive and why would they walk up to one any ways?

Because the keypad is a standard design. When the part is installed on the machine, it is not determined whether or not it will be a drive up or walk in ATM, therefore all the keypads are braille.

db 25 to usb on an old braille display?

July 23, 2011 - 12:39 am 2 Comments

Hi i have old braille display Baum dm 80 /system 90 witch has two ports one is db25 male and the other one i don’t know.I have window eyes 7.0 screen reader witch supports this braille display but it is asking me on witch port is my braille display connected (it has com port 1-50,USB port and LPT 1-3 port).I also have db25F to usb cable. When i connect my braille display to computer using this cable there is some message on braille (which i do not understand naturally) and it does not work properly. So i was wondering does some one know how to configure this to work right?

You are trying to run it through the parallel port. Which is the LPT port.
