As far as I know there is only route to becoming a special education teacher. First, you will need to major in education- this could be a BA or BS in "Education", "Elementary education", "Secondary education", or something else based on your desired age range. The best would probably be a general "Education" degree. While working for your major around your junior (sometimes sophomore, depending on school) you will be asked to choose a specialty: English, science, social studies, mathematics, foreign languages, special education (or something of the sort), etc. The most "in demand" specialties happen to be mathematics, science, AND special education (lucky for you). Declare your specialty, graduate, get your teaching certificate (the college will handle this after you receive your major. just take this one step at a time) and you are ready to teach.

As the earlier user posted, you should have NO problem finding a job. Stop by (the website of) your nearest deaf and blind school, special education school, or even public or private school, and see what they can do for you.

While marking Thanksgiving and the launch of the holiday shopping season, Scott called upon the people of Illinois to translate their gratitude and raise awareness for disability rights by marking something else: their money.

On November 25, advocates for disability rights partnered with Citizens for Scott Lee Cohen during a demonstration where they distributed hundreds of Money Braillers to shoppers on Michigan Avenue.

Advocates for improving U.S. currency have worked hard to call attention to U.S. currency and the need to prevent discrimination against the visually impaired. With more than 180 countries issuing paper currency, the United States has stood alone by printing all denominations in the same size and color. Groups like The American Council of the Blind (ACB) have fought hard for improvements within the courts.

There is still a need to raise public awareness on the streets, said Melanie Brunson, Executive Director of ACB.

Scott took action because, as he said:

Its not enough for political insiders to only put in their two-cents. Distributing the money markers made an immediate difference and also serves a tangible reminder we can all do our part to make a difference.

Community leaders have a responsibility to ensure that individuals with disabilities can be independent and fully participate in society. Its typical for politicians to be reactive to issues like this, but we must be proactive at the same time.

While surveying organizations who serve the physically disabled, Scott was told they commonly experience two problems: a delay of state services and challenges toward employment.

According to the 2009 Case for Inclusion Report, Illinois Medicaid services to Americans with Disabilities ranks among the bottom 10 of all states.

This is not acceptable, acknowledged Scott. As Lieutenant Governor, I promise to fight for improved services in Illinois for individuals with disabilities.
