Why are their Braille dots on the numbers of drive up ATM machines?

January 31, 2010 - 3:11 am 14 Comments

Braille is written language for the blind using a series of raised dots in sequenced combinations to produce letters that can be felt as the finger is moved across them. ATM machines are for people to withdraw and deposit money in their bank accounts. A drive up ATM machine is one that can be accessed from outside by driving your car up next to it and rolling down your window to use it. Since blind people do not drive, why are brail dots on these ATM machines?

I have been asking the same questions my entire life!

Besides the fact a blind person shouldn’t be behind the wheel… how are they going to answer the questions, like "Which account" and "would you like a receipt for this transaction" or better yet, " English or Spanish?"

How do the blind use an ATM machine if it has braile, but no speakers?

Just because the keys are in braille doesn’t mean the display is!

Anyway, the answer is that these ATM’s have headphone jacks on them for the blind to plug headphones into. Then a voice reads what is on the screen to them. Take a pair of headphones with you next time and have a listen!
I’d imagine the old ones that didn’t have this they probably were taught by someone at the bank with a sample transaction and just remember the button sequences for the transactions they desired.

why are there brail dots at a drive up atm?

i was talking to a friend and hee brought this up. why are there brail dots if the people who would use those are blind and cant drive in the firstplace?

Federal law:

Section 4.34.4 of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (Appendix to Part 1191, 36 CFR Chapter XI, issued pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) says, "Instructions and all information for use [of an automated teller machine] shall be made accessible to and independently usable by persons with vision impairments."

So it’s the feds. The real question would be how do they follow along with on-screen instructions if there isn’t a head phone jack to plug into…
