December 17, 2010 - 9:18 pm 2 Comments

I mean when you are sitting on a chair, do you" visualize" it in your head because you can feel it? Please can I get some responces from the blind or people who have known ,or study the blind? Do they have brail computers?

Something like command prompt/DOS?

In America, why are there drive up ATMs with brail on them?

And how come they chain pens to the counter, and open the door wide?

Braille: Due to stupid regulations.
Pens: People walk off with pens all the time. They don’t even think about it. This is not unique to the US.
Door: Wut?

What two kinds of braille are most popular in the United States?

There are three major categories of Braille worldwide. Two of them are used most in the U.S. What are they?

Visual Braille

Has anyone joined up the dots within Braille letters to make them more recognisable to sighted people?

November 11, 2010 - 6:27 pm 1 Comment

Braille is clearly an excellent alphabetic system, but hard for sighted people to grasp. Would joining up the dots within the Braille cells help, and, if so, has this been thought of before?

No

I’m told these violated Community Guidelines. They were answered but I can’t see the answers.
What is the scientific word for the study of origins?
In biology a † symbol is used to indicate an extinct creature. Is there a symbol to indicate a lazarus taxon?
Is there a way to see the worst rated members at Yahoo Answers?
Anyone know the sci-fi movie with a broken down giant robot at a TV station & personal computers were illegal?
What’s the best Spore graphics card with 4 monitors under Linux?
How does 1 who’s visually impaired, agree 2 an EULA before the screen reader or braille display software runs?
Does any1 know of a online Hdd Hex Editor (no installation)?
How do these violate anything?

Whoever told you that these questions violated the community guidelines should really not participate on Yahoo! Answers. None of those questions are violation as far as I am concerned.

How can blind people use the internet?

October 28, 2010 - 12:36 am 5 Comments

My uncle is blind. I was wondering if there is a monitor that can displays braille. Also, is there some type of GPS that could make it possible for him to drive?

For computer use, there are many adaptive programs that allow blind/visually impaired folks access. My wife has 2 for reading, one for writing. The 2 screen readers are "JAWS" (Job Access With Speech) and ZoomText with reader. Both will "read" what normally appears on the monitor screen (if the computer even has a monitor…..my wife has one that doesn’t even have a monitor) and inputs and navigation are done by keyboard commands, similar to the old DOS operating systems. With her JAWS and ZoomText, she is able to do her work, read her e-mail, participate on Y!A and Facebook, and do just about everything else a "normally" sighted person does.

For typing, there is a program that my wife uses called "DragonSpeak", which is voice-recognition technology tailored to individual users. Once DS "knows" the person’s voice, all they do is speak into a headset, which then allows the software to "type" what has been spoken. Otherwise, it is simple keyboard memorization that is used for typing.

As to driving…..out of the question. For one, GPS is not that accurate; and there are too many variables in operating a motor vehicle that depend on good vision to be done safely. My wife has a Sendero portable GPS that she uses when walking to her destinations for her job, and it screws her up sometimes because it is not totally accurate.

The technology is available for computer use, but it is not cheap. All of the adaptive programs my wife has cost a little over $800 each. She was able to obtain them through our States Commission For The Blind. Check with your States Department of Vocational Rehabilitation to see if they might be able to help defray the costs, or look into community service organizations such as Elks or Lions to see if they have ways that might help as well.

Try asking your mom. I bet she knows plenty and if she doesn’t she knows which direction to point you in. Communication with your parents is a really important thing.
